Summer of Series 2012

Since I was toying around with the idea of doing something like this this winter, why not join in the fun early?! Simply put, get further into (and possibly finish, for me) some series before starting others!

Since discovering FictFact several months ago I have been made aware or many series (and authors) that I had never heard of before. So, before delving into some new series I'm going to knock out some I have already begun to get into. Most of these are books I don't own, but my Public Library has a lot of books available through inter-library loan.

Now, I don't actually expect read ALL of the books listed below, but I hope to put a pretty good dent in the list! For exceptionally long series (I'm lookin' at you Stephanie Plum and Cedar Cove!) I will only list the next 2 or 3 in the series. Here in my list, in order of how they are presently in my tabs (in other words, no order in particular ;) )

R.I.P. Challenge V

Though the weather outside ain’t frightful, this type of reading makes September and October delightful. I know that as I have gathered together books for this, the fifth annual R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril Challenge, I have felt that chill up my spine and an anticipation that was hard to put on hold until now.

There are two simple goals for the R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril V Challenge:

1. Have fun reading.
2. Share that fun with others.

As I do each and every year, there are multiple levels of participation that allow you to be a part of R.I.P. Vwithout adding the burden of another commitment to your already busy lives. There is even a one book only option for those who feel that this sort of reading is not their cup of tea but want to participate all the same.

R.I.P. V officially runs from September 1st through October 31st. But lets go ahead and break the rules. Lets start today!!!

I'm only going to join up at the level that requires me to read two books. I'm overlapping so many challenges right now, I want to at least have a shot at completing this challenge. =)

The Banned Books Reading Challenge 2010

I will admit it. There are some things that I'd really love to ban (ie my 4yo busting on me in the bathroom!). But banning books!? No, thank you. So to show my disdain for censorship, I'm joining this challenge.

Goals of This Challenge:

To bring attention to books that have been challenged or banned

To support authors whose freedom of expression have been questioned or challenged by buying and reading their books

To increase awareness of censorship

The best way to fight censorship is to do what these challengers rarely do, and that is to READ the books that have been challenged and educate ourselves on their content and impact on our society!

Guidelines:

The challenge will run from September 1, 2010 to October 15, 2010.

The challenge is open to any reader with an online blogging platform who'd like to participate.

I personally will devote my attention towards mostly YA literature challenged within the last decade, but you are welcome to any books of your choosing, from challenged picture books (there are a lot of them) to frequently banned classics.

I will make it my goal to read at least 7 challenged or banned books (one for each day of Banned Books Week), but you are welcome to read less or more.

So I've looked at some of the lists that Steph Su links to in her sign-up post and here is my plan.

To Kill a Mockingbird Challenge

(from the host blog: Hope is the Word) In honor of the 50th anniversary of the publication of one of my favorite novels of all time, I am hosting the To Kill a Mockingbird reading challenge here at Hope Is the Word during the month of August. I am super excited about this endeavor because I believe the last time I read this novel was when I taught it during my short-lived career as a high school teacher. I am even more excited about the prospect of enticing those who have never read this wonderful story to do it this year!

I plan to listen to the audiobook version. I have read the book about 6 times and seen the movie another 3, maybe 4 times.

If I can find the movie, my favorite video store chain recently closed all but 1 or 2 of its stores in the state, I will also watch the movie, gladly, again. {Gregory Peck in TKM... totally swoon-worthy.}

Typically British Reading Challenge 2010

Timeline: 1st Jan 2010~ 31st Dec 2010. Only books started on January 1st count towards this challenge.

Details:

1. Anyone can join. You don't need a blog to participate.

2. There are four levels:

• "Put The Kettle On" – Read 2 Typically British novels.
• "Gordon Bennett" – Read 4 Typically British novels.
• "Bob's Your Uncle" – Read 6 Typically British novels.
• "Cream Crackered" – Read 8 Typically British novels.

So, I was trying to not join any MORE challenges. I really need to join another like I need another hole in my my head, right? But I was I supposed to resist those level names?! Please see Book Chick City's post for more of the rules and to sign up!

I'm going to join at the Cream Crackered level. I have no idea what the term means but I will enjoy fulfilling it's obligations. =)

Chunkster Reading Challenge - 2010

I've seen the Chunkster Reading Challenge around before, but I haven't been adventurous enough to join before now. This time around the challenge is being hosted by Wendy on its own blog.

Definition of a Chunkster:

A chunkster is 450 pages or more of ADULT literature (fiction or nonfiction) ... A chunkster should be a challenge.

If you read large type books your book will need to be 525 pages or more ... The average large type book is 10-15% longer or more so I think that was a fair estimate.

Take Another Chance Challenge

I just can't seem to help myself. I'm joining two more challenges today. One doesn't start for 2 months... does that make it better? lol

Because of the enthusiasm for the first Take A Chance Challenge, I decided to create a new set of challenges for 2010. This year, the challenge will be called Take Another Chance. Like last year, the challenge is all about taking chances with your reading by finding books to read in unusual or random ways. Unlike last year, I'm offering different levels of participation and a longer time frame to encourage greater participation and decrease frustration.

I'm going to sign up for this challenge at the Moderate Gamble level, but I am hoping to do all of the challenges.

My last name is Pierce so I am going to read Wicked Under the Covers by Barbara Pierce.

Challenge 2: Blogroll Roulette
I went to my Google Reader (I have it set to only show blogs with new posts) I entered 25 as the max on Random.org and it gave me 22. At the time that I did this, the 22nd blog with a new post was Moonlight to Twilight (it's an adults only blog). After much perusal of Ms M's blog, I finally settled on one (no easy feat with all of the juicy stories to pick from). The book I picked is A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole.

Challenge 3: 100 Best Book
I used the 100 Best Romance Novel of the 20th Century list. I picked The Nonesuch by Georgette Heyer.

Challenge 4: Prize Winner Book

Challenge 5: Title Word Count
I got 4 when I use Random.org this time (5 was the max). I had already started a book when I did this and that book happened to have 4 words in the title! So the book that I read for this challenge was When the Morning Comes by Cindy Woodsmall. {my review of When the Morning Comes}

Challenge 6: Genre Switch-Up
I've read a lot of different genres at least once. One I have not read is westerns. After a bit of searching and comparing, I have decided to listen to Hondo by Louis L'Amour. My library system has it.

Derby Girl by Shauna Cross {borrowed from the library -- also read from 2010 Young Adult Reading challenge} I haven't seen the movie (Whip It) yet. It weren't any copies available at the video store that we use and there are 30+ people ahead of me in the queue at the library.

Ideas:
Angels & Demons - I have read the book already, but I have yet to see the movie. My friend Patrick says that the movie is "ok".

The Green Mile - I haven't read the book OR seen the movie yet. Same friend Patrick LOVES this movie. This would also qualify for the Chunkster Challenge.

South Asian Author Challenge

This is a new challenge.

What is the South Asian Author Challenge?
This challenge is to encourage people to read books by South Asian Authors – South Asia being India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Please not that it does not include the Middle East! The books can be from any time period, contemporary or classic. If you want to talk about the challenge on Twitter or tweet your reviews, use the hashtag #saac.
