Review of: When the Morning Comes

Her relationship with fiancé Paul Waddell in tatters, Hannah Lapp has fled her secluded Old Order Amish community in hopes of finding a new home in Ohio with her shunned aunt. Hampered by limited education and hiding her true identity, Hannah struggles to navigate the confusing world of the Englischers.

Back in Owl’s Perch, Pennsylvania, Paul is wracked with regret over his treatment of Hannah. Fearing for her safety, he tries to convince Hannah’s remaining allies–brother Luke, best friend Mary, and loyal Matthew Esh–to help search for his love. Hannah’s father, however, remains steadfastly convinced of her sinful behavior. His blindness to his family’s pain extends to her sister, Sarah, who shows signs of increasing instability.

Convinced her former life is irreparably destroyed, Hannah finds purpose and solace in life with her aunt and in a growing friendship with Englischer Martin Palmer. Will the countless opportunities in her new life persuade Hannah that her place is amongst the Englischers — or will she give in to her heart’s call to return home and face her past?

When the Morning Comes is book 2 in a three book series called Sisters of the Quilt. I haven't reviewed the first "When the Heart Cries" but I have read it and really enjoyed it. I enjoyed it so much that I requested When the Morning Comes before I was even halfway finished with When the Heart Cries.

In the first (When the Heart Cries) Hannah Lapp is 17 and madly in love with Paul Waddell. There is a big problem though. Hannah is Old Order Amish and Paul's family is Plain Mennonite. Paul owns a truck, is going to college to be a Social Services caseworker. Paul and Hannah become secretly engaged in When the Heart Cries. Several other things transpire that cause Hannah to leave home in search of the aunt she never even knew existed. {Trying to not spoil this first book for anyone.}

At the beginning of When the Morning Comes Hannah is newly arrived in Alliance, Ohio from her family's home in Owl's Perch, Pennsylvania. Hannah is determined to find her aunt, Zabeth (as in the tail-end of Elizabeth).

Having run away from her Old Order Amish family, Hannah reluctant to use her real last name when applying for work. Will this impede Paul or her family from finding her? Will they even look for her? Both of these are things Hannah wonders. She goes ahead and lies about her last name though.

Hannah makes a couple of friends in brother and sister, Martin and Faye Palmer. Hannah takes an instant liking to Faye's two small children. I hope it won't spoil anything if I mention that Hannah does connect with her aunt. Hannah lives with Zabeth once they do finally meet and things go along quite smoothly for awhile.

Back in Owl's Perch, though things aren't going as well for some of those that Hannah has left behind. Will Matthew Esh's relationship with Elle survive now that she may be leaving to spend time with her Englisher father? What exactly is going on with Hannah's sister Sarah?

To find out the answers to these and other questions, read When the Morning Comes. You will want to read When the Heart Cries first though. This is not a stand-alone.

  1. I've always been a bit interested in the Amish culture because my grandmother lived in "Amish" country near Lancaster PA and I was always curious about all the "funny clothes" I saw and the horse and buggies when I was a little girl.
